In the 19 sixties and before, to be black was to be disadvantage. Affirmative action comes in as a policy designed to redress that kind of intrenched discrimination. But it very quickly became the case that not all black people whare poor or middle class. So my feeling about affirmative action is that having to be based on race was something that made sense, but it should have been time limited.
