Marilyn Reese Shepard and Sam Shepard were a happy couple living in Los Angeles. The birth of their son turned Marilyn into a nervous wreck. She became reclusive against her will, and felt helpless as she watched Sam continue to indulge in a promiscuous lifestyle. When he left for long shifts at the hospital, Marilyn had panic attacks about being alone.
