The Penal Station in Tasmania

Tasmania was an isolated penal state, separated from the mainland by a mountainous wilderness. Convicts were mainly those who had re-offended whilst already serving sentences. According to historian Hamish Maxwell Stewart, convicts were sent there for a wide range of reasons. About half had been sentenced to secondary transportation for theft, robbery, fraud, or receiving - all committed while in Tasmania.
