306 british and commonwealths soldiers were executed for cowardice in the first world war. Cowardice, like desertion, was a military offence that carried the highest penalty. Britain was one of the last countries holding out from pardoning these people. The threat of cowardice was a critical tool for a situation that demanded obedience - even to a fatal degree.
