Rossley had read the Christoff's trilogy during a cultural exchange trip to Moscow. Marcy, who by middle school had become a better cook and a baker than Rossley, was carving out balls of cantaloupe with an ice cream scoop. The narrative labyrinths of the novels had baffled her. There was plenty of violence in the trilogy, rapes, mutilations, executions. I think they may have permanently destroyed my appetite.
