Is There Any Explanation of Contingent Reality?

i wanted to test this other graduate student's mind and see what they think about a kind of traditional argument from explanation. His quick response was, well, why think that this totality of contingent things has an explanation? Maybe it's just brute,. And we can sort of add, if you think that god ex i and god is brute, without any deeper outside explanation that produced god, then, you know, why can't the naturalist, or somebody who doesn't believe in god think the same thing about a the universe?
