Meditative Story

CHAPTER

I'm Here, Mama. I Know, I Know.

In 1945 in Chile, there's no divorce. My mother is not prepared to support three children. We move back to Chile to my grandparents' house until things get sorted out. And now my grandmother is gone too. I'm all too afraid of what might come next. It sounds pretty horrible, but it isn't so horrible really. Why would children be happy? It's a terrible time of fear and you don't have any control over anything. Most kids all over the world, not a happy time. The idea that children have to be happy is a very modern idea, a very American idea.
