Borders and the Scam

Jonah says he used a fake ID to get in and out of borders. The books were all fresh new at the time, but Borders resold them as part of their inventory. Jonah: I feel like if the book looks good, if it doesn't look like you took it in and like WrestleMania and did like some of those elbow, you know, like stomping on this shit, then like, it's a book. Like I'm going to get the same value out of it as I would have if it was fresh.

Just sprint away. Just sprint away. Just sprint away. And so yeah, then they kind of caught on and it ended. But I guess I've always felt this is a gray area with a scam. I'd like to get your thoughts because, you know, if you got a present as a gift during that point, you could just bring it back to borders and return it. And then they would still sell it. You know, I wasn't actually going in and stealing anything. I was just getting store credit and you didn't need to receive. So I don't, you know, I knew where the books came from, but I could have not known and just taken them there. Let me ask this. Okay. So just borders, did they sell like older books? Did they sell anything that was or was it like all fresh news? I think it was all fresh new, but I still think, I think that they resold these books as like part of their inventory. Cause then towards the end, they would like, they would look it up in the book. We don't sell this book. We can't give you credit for it. Like I think they kind of caught on. Oh, so that's interesting to me because if they made a coin off of it, then that store credit, right? It depending on how much, cause I guess like, for some reason we're like used books. I feel like if the book looks good, if it doesn't look like you took it in and like WrestleMania and did like some of those elbow, you know, like stomping on this shit, then like, it's a book. Like I'm going to get the same value out of it as I would have if it was fresh. So yeah, yeah, I'm on your side regardless. Cause I scam up by the corporation and you're a professional musician. So look, you were doing what you had to do to get where you need to go. Yeah, I was getting research. I was learning about new influences. You know, and CDs were expensive back then. And like I said, I was getting imports. I couldn't afford that stuff. So yeah, I mean, I think it, but then borders did catch on and then they went out business. But also your friend sister also a flag for me because this, why were you hated? Like if you, if I see anybody, I know coming to a place of business that I work at and they are like, they got a fake ID. They're doing shit. I'm just going to do my job. Yeah. Yeah, look the other way. I think she almost did that Jonah, but you got freaked out. Right? Yeah. Hi, right? No, well, she was curious why I was using a fake ID return, probably like a book made for middle age people. But I think that I think it might have been on her part just also just curiosity. Like what, like what are you doing? Maybe not you're doing something wrong, but this just doesn't seem like something a normal person would do. Like this is a what, why people use fake IDs. Yeah, she's going to ask autumn questions later. Yeah. Fair enough. Fair enough. Couldn't see a Paul. Yeah. And then when you have a private moment, like a week later, whatever she could call you and say like, so why were you going by Paul? Right, right, right, right. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah. So, but that was sort of like my big scam. And this was a scam me and my friend, Dan pulled for like a while, like a whole school year, I think, until they caught on. And so we got a lot of CDs and it was, it was just like, what do you want to do in the weekend? It was like, I guess we got a one books by all these books, take them. The borders was like down the road. We just drive right over. And it was like, it was just coming of age. Skim. Yeah. Yeah. That was a time where businesses were, they were more thirsty, you know, for our business. Yeah. So they were like, oh, you can return because Nordstrom's had a similar policy, which they don't anymore, where it was like, there was always this mythical story that someone returned to. Tired in Nordstrom's.
