John Jakob, Bordered a Ship, North America

John Jacob Astor was born in Germany and moved to London with his family at the age of 20. His father tried to teach him to be a butcher, but he didn't really like it. He ended up working as a street vendor for a little while before moving on to become an assistant to a Quaker fur dealer named Robert Brown. The move from London to the US has also led to Astor sometimes being identified as English American instead of noting his birth in Germany.
