The role of a satchem was to uphold the law adjudicating farm disputes, negotiate treaties, control, foreign contacts, collect tribute and so on. Ownership of land did not lie at the basis of society and economy in the sense of an individual owning land private property. Wars conducted like this have been called morning wars that is relating to tears rather than breakfast. For Indians, trade meant much more than a commercial relationship it was an important way of building trust, friendship and relationships. Gifts were also an important part of treaty making.
