The Importance of Dignity
Dignity is a collection of norms and intuitions, which are totally subject to change over time. It's possible that dignity as a concept is unfit for the heavy moral demands we place upon it. For example, religious repressions have often been rationalized as a defense of religious dignity. We try to get the full set of rules by writing down a bunch of human rights. But is that really some sort of moral articulation of having found the perfect set? Or just a practical way for the international community to pressure some countries who are being cruel with an actual legal stick?"
