Is the Theory of Protein Folding True?
In string theory, the way the universe behaves at big distances will depend on how all these extra dimensions fold. And like with protein folding, there are just gazillions of ways that it can shake out into worlds in which things can live. So even if you could by pure reason or derived the final theory, it wouldn't actually tell you anything about our universe. We don't understand string theory as well as we'd like to and also string theory may well not be correct. But I think it's pretty plausible that even if string theory is wrong, the theories that are correct will have a similar properties.
