The Importance of Race in Admissions
In 1973, when Alan Bakke applied to the medical school of the University of California Davis, the school had a racial quota system. At that time, most people in the US didn't go to college. Only 16% of men and fewer than 10% of women had completed four years or more. The Supreme Court ultimately agreed with him. But it was an unusual decision, because some of the justices also said that schools could consider race as a factor in admissions.
