In the resurrection guidance that Helen took down after the course was already done from Jesus, he basically said that he learned his final lesson that there is no death during the crucifixion. I don't think he was perceiving it in the absolutely horrific way that we would perceive it if it was happening to us. But still, I'm sure it was a challenge and that challenge helped him learn his absolutely last lesson which led to the resurrection. So I assume it's got to be both.
