Are You the Son of God?
Jesus knew that this first temptation, coming as it did, was not simply an inducement to prove his power by way of a magic trick in the wilderness. The devil knows perfectly well who jesus is. He needs no proof. But he recognized the trap, knowing that while behavior or modification can be achieved by coercion, spirit transformation cannot. And so in response to the devil's first temptation, he declared, man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of the holy spirit.
