With the ease of the German advance, Hitler is emboldened. In a briefing with his staff officers, he points to a map on the wall,. I will raise that damn city, he snarls. Two huge concentration camp networks are set out to contain Soviet prisoners of war as forced laborers. At Mydanek, and then a new wing of the Auschwitz complex at Birkenau. A third new camp, Stutthoff, is established in the north of Nazi occupied Poland.
