If you go the other way around the earth, you would be a day behind. So if you're going in the direction the sun is, and so you are adding a whole day to your life as you go around that other people are not enjoying. I don't know how many people know that story, but it's in the notes of Magellan's voyage, kept by Antoine Pigafetta. He pinned up a broadsheet in the center of town and said, don't tell anybody.
