Ghadis groups are often portrayed as a one dimensional set of actors. They don't seem to have very clear political aims, but they do try and out-compete the existing states. Tat: I think that there's a mix of motivations for them - it's an ongoing political experiment. It seems that local populations do not necessarily welcome them with open arms. But at the same time, i don't think we really know where this next phase in our conflict is going," he says.
