Wesley's mother, Susanna, had inculcated in them a basic Armenian instinct and an opposition to the doctrine of election. Meanwhile, Whitfield can't imagine Christian orthodoxy in anything other than fairly explicit reform term. So this was also a theological collision that seems to be virtually inevitable.
