Why Wouldn't You Celebrate Your Birthday?

The first group that we know who actively celebrated a normal person's birthday was the Romans. They had very public holidays to celebrate birthdays like for whoever was in charge at the time, whatever emperor was in charge. A really lovely source for this is a writing tablet, which was excavated in the 80s in northern Britain. It contains a well-preserved example of a birthday invitation. The wife of a Roman officer invites another officer's wife to her house on the third day of September to celebrate her own birthday.
