Shostakovich's 13th Symphony
The first movement of the 13th Symphony was always going to be the most politically problematic for Shostakovich. The text reads, There is no memorial above Babi Yar. I'm frightened. I feel as old today as the Jewish race itself. Here I wander through ancient Egypt, and here I hang on the cross and die. And I still bear the mark of the nails.
