The prison population in the United States has quintupled. A moment where more Black Americans are in prison or under correctional supervision today, then at the height of slavery in 1865. The overwhelming majority of those who find themselves in prisons and jails are not there because of violent offenses. If we only lock up violent offenders, we would not have mass incarceration.
