Hattie's Blackness in Hollywood
Gone with the wind was a massive phenomenon, and it swept the oscars that year. Mc daniel's performance as mammy convinces you that the character is part of scarlet o'hara's family - incredibly insidious. Though playing a stereotype in a story about white supremacy, hattie believed she could bring the same sly humanizing critique to mammy that she had practising since her satirical minstrel shows 25 years earlier. The range of emotion hattie displayed as mammy went way beyond the cartoons of smiling slaves and servants happily working or dancing on command for most films.
