Robinson Crusoe: The First Novel
The idea of a character stranded on an island going through fundamental personal change or coming to understand new truths about the world was not invented by Robinson Crusoe. The book has cemented this theme in our cultural landscape right around the world and there's even a whole genre of adult and children's fiction based on this theme called the Robinsonard. There are examples that come before Defoe like Shakespeare's The Tempest and Thomas Moore's Utopia islands.
