Thessalonica: The Heart of the Roman Empire
Thessalonica was the heart of the Roman Empire in a lot of ways. Any trade moving east to west went through Thessalonica and was taxed. It also sits well in the north and south, so you had all of Greece to the south and Balkans to the north. So that's first location. Second was its pluralistic religious culture.
