Are Beliefs Required to Explain Adaptive Behavior?
Planega: Beliefs aren't required to explain adaptive behavior, let alone true beliefs. All that's required is that there are indicator mechanisms. He cites a marine bacteria which can detect magnetic north and travel deeper into the ocean than an ox would have done if it were on the surface. Planega: The probability of my cognitive faculties being reliable given unguided evolutionary mechanisms is pretty low.
