Is There a Way to Make a Mixed Use Plan?

The future of cities is going to be decided by public transportation. Is it valuable to have companies nestled together? What do workers want and do? And what can companies ask them to do? I like the idea of mixed use in theory, but i think it's hard to convert office buildings into residences.
