Gilbert got to know Ron Kovac, a Marine who'd been paralyzed during his second tour of Vietnam. He and Fonda began kicking around an idea for a film that took inspiration from Kovac's speech. They eventually wound up with a 240-page epic titled Buffalo Ghost. Gilbert: "I didn't know how difficult it was to write a film ... I like movies"
