Aristotle and Plato in Antiquity
Theophrastus was assigned to look at plants, and he continued on in some of the same methodology. He doesn't actually write an explanatory treatise, but Theophrastus moves on to do that. Avicenna is very familiar with his work and does some brilliant work on the biological works. They come back to us through the Arabs in the 13th century.
