Samuel Bolton was born into slavery in Westmoreland, Virginia. He met a woman named Rebecca and they eventually got married just before the Civil War began. Shortly after they were married, Samuel was conscripted by the Confederacy to work on the railroads in the Blue Ridge Mountains. To do that, he'd have to return to the south, to Virginia, where he himself was still a wanted man.
