The Importance of the Sundial

The official timekeeper of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus was an Islamic scholar called Ibn Al-Shatir. He made a sundial that scholars tend to think was probably the most sophisticated that had ever been made up to that point. It measured hours since sunset and also could measure what were called equal hours where it was the whole day and night period divided equally no matter what season.
