Accessibility
Before my life event, I was still a proponent of universal design and I did think accessibility is just an essential element of good design. But the shift in that belief through my own experience actually challenged that when you compare accessibility to actually designing for a certain ability difference from the get go, then you find that there's a lot more opportunities for innovation. If we accept the notion that disability is actually a shortcoming of design environments, then we can extend that to say other social constraints like marginalized communities, gender bias, literacy, age,. Even beyond that, you could extend the argument into a critique around sustainability.
