In 15 88, abortion was not a sin before 24 weeks into pregnancy under gregory the fourteenth. Contraception and abortion were both considered grave sins because they're an attack on human life. The church wanted to be a witness that even if civil governments will not stand up for the unborn, the church will by whatever means it can.
