The Origins of Francophone African Theater

Sally Kohn: I was curious if you had this background in performance and theater before coming to the project, which it sounds like you indeed did. So how did you come to focus on Senegal in particular for your research? Kohn: In my kind of reading of Francophone African theater, I came to this story of the Eko Lwudiam Ponti, which was training a school in Senegal that trained some of the future elite of French West Africa. The timing was perfect for at the time of independence for these to also go on to become the presidents and politicians or sort of intellectuals of their independent countries.
