Westerners tend to think of the Silk Road as exclusively an East West relationship. Does that mean that that is almost a colonial astitude really and that the Japanese version is different? I'm not sure whether colonial is the right term and I want to necessarily use that. The Silk Road gets imagined in different ways from different parts of the world. So for China it's about the spread of Chinese culture.
