Is This a War on Slavery?
The slave trade on the east coast surges, and it reaches a peak in the mid to late nineteenth century. As you get a globalization of the growing industrial capitalist economy, there's a huge boom in the demand for primary commodities. This means that there's a demand for african commodities, including ivory. The way in which that is done is by enslaving africans who become the porters. And then the profits are doubled, in a sense, because not only do you sell the ivory when you reach the coast, you also sell the black slaves.
