The Eugenics Movement and the Race Science Movement
The eugenics movement was influenced by post-war innovations in orthopedic surgery, where you had the idea that you could reclaim bodies from industrial accidents or accidents of war. The whole idea of many of these large state hospitals or silums was a kind of economy of care argument. And they frame this in ways of like, oh, we're going to cure cancer in three generations. We're going to get rid of intellectual disabilities through this sort of elimination and extermination.
