Johnny Cash and the Tennessee 3 were a group of four young musicians. They auditioned for manager Sam Phillips, who was impressed by their sound. He told them they didn't need to be technically great but just have right kind of sound. The resulting boom-chick sound would become a signature of Cash's recordings over next few decades.
