Face book thought they were kind of making the same decision, where they'll benefit from the whole ego system. Face books is more efficient. They don't have to invest, and they also don't have to have an opinion. To me there was this real danger of grow big fast, but not be able to effectively monetize their user base if they weren't able to keep growing into the more valuable userrace. So i do still think that's true, even with your comment about them having really great cash flow dynamics. But i would say this company needed to ipeo,. or go raised, like a soft bank round, or more likely, a ten cent round around the time...
