The film is book ended by this exasperating sentiment, in which jessica is shown in a boat, thinking vately, i can't believe that it happened, and yet i have to believe it. In some scenes it's evident that there is severe gas lighting and manipulation by the husband, but at other times we feel almost certain that the wife is delusional. The uncertainty only intensifies the horror element. Now, incidentally, the deterioration of the 19 sixties counterculture has been cited as a theme of this film by observers. What was once an animating for s is now a lifeless relic of happier times.
