In the late 18 hundreds, there was a big wave of emigration to cities across north america. New multi unit tenement buildings cropped up to house these new people. In 19 12, toronto banned apartment buildings in most of the city. This band was an early version of exclusionary zonig where large swathes suburban centres are reserved for single family homes. Developers at the time were trying to associate their buildings with european class and luxury. Instead, they were met with accusations of immorality.
