Why Do Mental States Cause Stuff?
Philip Thaxton: I don't think we have an intelligible explanation of why particular experiences have the causal powers that they do. He says if you push the explanatory issues too far, then it does tend to undermine phenomenal realism. But there is another way of getting out of this problem he adds. As philip says in his paper, the functionalist doesn't have this problem because consciousness is determined by nothing above and over.
