There's a shift in his thinking when he discovers death drive in 1920, there's this shift to thinking that it's actually something like enjoyment. The path to pleasure can be perfectly conscious, as you pointed out. That is absolutely what's at stake in the drive and what'sat stake in beyond the pleasure principle.
