Bruce Schneier: I think a worse thing that could happen is that we actually discover an evil law of physics, which says something like all conscious life eventually has to go out. If there are bound on the number of computational steps that a computer can execute during the lifetime of a universe, if there is, then physics will also impose a bound on the amount of knowledge that can be created.
