The Hobbit and the Rehearim
In Appendix F in section two on translation, we get some more information that connects the Hobbit tongue to that of Rohan. In explaining that the word Hobbit is simply an invention, Tolkien writes that the folk of the Shire and of Brie used the word kuduk which was not found elsewhere. Mary-Dok, however, records that the King of Rohan used the word Kuddukhan or Haldwella. And since it's been noted the Hobbits had once spoken a language closely related to that of the Rehearim, it seems likely that kuduk was a worn-down form of kudduKhan.
