The Importance of Assessment in Teaching
All teachers certainly within our study felt assessment was important and it's part of teaching doesn't it how can you know what to teach your students next if you don't know what they already know? I think the issue is how these assessments are used within accountability structures. In Israel actually the Ministry of Education was very much against the publication of test results in the National Standardized HES because they were concerned about how high stakes it will become. But pressure from freedom of information movements and parents led to this policy being implemented at the publication of data. These data are then used by the media and put into league tables by the media but also have a knock on effect on who goes to local schools so
