The Battle of Roanoke
Sir Richard Grenville's fleet left England in April, and Francis Drake set sail for the Caribbean with his fleet a few weeks later. Manteo and Wanchis also joined the expedition to serve as guides and interpreters. Thomas Harriot, who had been learning their language, also came along; he kept a detailed account of the voyage. John White was an artist, and he drew detailed illustrations of the region and its people.
