The Importance of Kingship in the American Revolution
In Deuteronomy, the first book of Samuel, it's pretty simple. The Israelites were never supposed to ask for a king. Milton and the Republican theorists sort of run with that, and they describe human kingship as idolatrous. And so you could fairly say that the rabbis invented the American Revolution. But nevertheless, all the arguments that Milton makes on behalf of Republicanism is a surrendering of freedom.
