The Pre Reflective Dimension of Empathy
In the 1990s, a group of Italian scientists discovered what we now call mirror neurons largely by accident. They are a specialized set of cells in the nervous system in the brain that we're discovered while doing research on macaque monkeys. This specialized kind of neuron is now thought to be what houses empathy at the level of neural activity. It was first discovered in non human animals and so they made the monkeys do various kinds of things like reach for things move around or raise their arms.
