What Happened to Huawei?

Huawei was popular among telecoms companies because it provided reasonably good equipment at low prices. The US government had a number of different criticisms of Huawei about selling according to Iran that was violating sanctions, about espionage. But the key challenge of Huawei was, as you say, it was too big and too embedded in networks for the US to trust that it wouldn't be used for espionage in the future or for coercion in the future. And so that's what we've seen over the past several years is a lot of Japanese, Australian cell phone networks blocking Huawei from their networks.
